Paul Kessling

Works on paper in oils and ink

IN MY EXPERIENCE - Landscape painter Paul Kessling on crop circles, appeasing bees, and the darkness within. Article from One Life magazine.

Review by Observer Art Critic, Laura Cumming.

Paul Kessling was born in 1965 in Dundee, Scotland. After moving to London, he attended Alleyns School in Dulwich. Following school he went to Goldsmiths College for a Fine Arts Foundation Course, then on to take a Degree in Sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art.

After leaving Wimbledon, Paul went to the Royal College of Art for his Masters Degree, where he studied with and subsequently worked for Sir Eduardo Paolozzi. After leaving the Royal College Paul worked as an artist in Camberwell, South London.

Paul’s fascination with painting and landscape began when he won an RCA Travel Scholarship; he used this to mount an expedition to the South Pacific to study the statues of Easter Island. It was here that he first worked outside with inks on paper. The transition from sculpture to painting happened when he moved to South Oxfordshire and the undulating chalk hills of the Berkshire Downs – the Ridgeway.

Paul’s work came to national attention when he was commissioned to paint a series of landscapes at dawn for BBC TV’s Home Front. The programme generated much interest in Paul’s work, and now he regularly carries out private and corporate commissions both in the UK and abroad.
